A good dispensing system is more than just an affordable machine that reliably opens a medication drawer. The software that enables the dispensing must be easy to use. Moreover, it must also serve as a repository of patient care data, a decision-support resource and an inventory management tool. Together, all of these elements save time, save money, reduce errors and increase efficiency.
At medDISPENSE, we understand the importance of secure access to controlled substances and sensitive patient information, and the software has been designed to provide multiple safeguards to preserve the integrity of these important elements. Our development team maintains a consistent and collaborative relationship with governing agencies to assure our products meet or exceed required or recommended levels of security.
Our strong user base provides medDISPENSE with a valuable source of input for enhancements to the software. As a result, our software applications are both stable and extensive...and continually evolving to meet changing customer needs and emerging regulatory requirements.

Ease of Use
The guiding philosophy at medDISPENSE is to provide dispensing automation that meets a facility's needs as well as its budget. Inherent in our approach is a user interface that is quickly learned and easy to operate - both for nurses and pharmacists - and yet is robust enough to meet the unique dispensing needs of every medDISPENSE customer.
The core application that comes standard on all medDISPENSE Base Unit dispensing equipment is the primary operating system when there is no interface to an external software system within a facility. This is the most intuitive software available for dispensing automation.
The software was developed in cooperation with healthcare professionals who preserved the ease-of-training objective while maintaining extensive functionality. Nurses typically are trained on medDISPENSE in less than 15 minutes. The user interface takes full advantage of Touchscreen TechnologyTM.
Navigating through the software on the large 15.1" touch-screen monitor is easy and quick; important factors when nurses are pulling patient medications.

Patient Profile
The Patient Profile Interface displays a patient's pharmacy-approved orders. Because medDISPENSE integrates with any HL7-compliant (HL7, or Health Level 7, is a standard for technology interoperability) pharmacy management software system (this covers 99.8% of all vendors), a nurse can view comprehensive patient information from your pharmacy management software. This helps reduce medication errors while allowing the facility to meet JCAHO regulatory guidelines.
Added features allow a nurse to prioritize the medications he or she wants to pull by filtering or prioritizing the orders. For example, you can show all orders due at 0800, or you can limit the profile display to only show medications due within the next hour. For increased flexibility, you can also limit the orders based on frequency - perhaps only showing the PRN orders. Combined, these features contribute to safe and efficient medication dispensing.
The Patient Profile Interface displays important patient information:
- All approved medications
- Drug on drug interactions
- Known allergies
- Administration times for the drug
- Physician's name
- Dosage
- Signature

System Management Options
medDISPENSE can be interfaced with a facility's information system or it can stand alone in an office of smaller facility. Either way, all dispensing transactions are tracked and stored with up to five years of data. Customized usage reports are easily produced and reprinted at any time.
Pharmacy control - All decentralized automated dispensing units are networked through a pharmacy workstation (server) located in the pharmacy department. The Pharmacy Workstation is loaded with medDISPENSE Pharmacy Center™ software and is used to input global user and patient information, manage par levels, print restock and usage reports, and perform many other functions. The same functions performed on the server may also be performed at an actual dispensing machine.
Reporting - System reports come standard with all medDISPENSE equipment. This value-added feature provides customers with a depth of analysis that is unattainable when dispensing is done manually. This is information that can be used not only by the pharmacy, but also by administration, nursing, accounting and materials management. Your facility will also have greater accountability of a medication from the moment it enters your pharmacy to the time it is dispensed to the patient. This helps to ensure regulatory compliance and reduce errors, waste, theft, inventory cost and time.

Billing Interface
The medDISPENSE operating software can be configured to integrate with a facility's billing system software. The Admissions, Discharges & Transfers (ADT) Billing Interface integrates with our patient accounting software, thus eliminating the manual processes that surround billing.
By automatically billing dispensed medication to a patient's account (and conversely crediting a patient's account should a dispensed medication be returned) this important feature has been proven to lower costs and increase revenue.

End-of-Shift Counts
medDISPENSE systems can eliminate the requirement for end-of-shift counts. This is done by enabling the dispensing nurse to perform a count prior to removing the dose(s); the system then verifies the nurse's count against the recorded count. This creates a perpetual inventory that is chronologically verified by the subsequent dispensing nurse. Any discrepancies are immediately reported by the system to the pharmacy and/or nurse.
